Scott's Birthday Cake

This cake was for a friend's birthday.  My husband is a Yankee fan so he was not impressed, although he is a big fan of my work and very supportive!  I had so much fun with this one.  It was my first "sculpted" cake and I always wanted to use my grass tip.  For each cake I had to buy new supplies but at this point I have the "Wilton master tip set"  so I am set in the tip category!  Who knew there were so many cake decorating supplies.  Again, this cake is buttercream because I am afraid to cover with fondant just yet, plus some people do not like the taste of fondant.  Next up, my son's first birthday cake!  I am so excited and have the cake sketched out.  Wait for the posting in a few weeks....it's a Mickey Mouse Cake!

Mom's Birthday Cake

This was my mother's birthday cake.  I did not spend as much time with this one and it show's!  I am having trouble managing my time because I can only work on the cakes during nap times during the week and sometimes I can get really stressed out!  My son comes first but with cakes there are deadlines so this is what I am struggling with.  Will I be able to manage a cake business with my 1 year old being my first priority?

First Baby Shower Cake

This was my baby sister's baby shower cake!  I stressed about it for months but was so happy to make a special cake for her.  I learned that a cake made from love is so amazing and at this point my heart was beginning to really want to make something out of this hobby.  This was my first stacked cake which caused me the most stress.  Staking is so much harder then it looks!  The cake was a Vanilla Velvet Cake with strawberry filling and was VERY yummy.  I was not yet confident in covering the cakes with fondant so I used buttercream but the decoration are fondant.  I learned from my previous cakes so the bugs are made out of gum paste.

Some progress - Friend's Birthday Cake

This cake was a birthday cake for a friend.  I made marshmallow fondant which taste better but difficult to get to the right consistency.  I had a LOT of trouble with the bow but again I learned a lot from this cake!  I now know to use part gum paste or all gum paste for bow type decorations.  I did better with stacking the cake and even torted it making 4 thin layers.

First Cakes - Twins's 1st Birthday!

Here are the cakes I was practicing for.  They were for our dear friend's twin girls turning 1 year old.  Boy was I nervous!  The hardest part was stacking the layers, I am still perfecting that!  The cakes tasted really good.  One was a chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream frosting and the other was a vanilla cake with strawberry filling.  I am getting better with the borders but still working on writing and flowers.  The drop flowers could use some work but I really liked the way the roses turned out.

First Cakes - Uncle's Birthday Cake

This was a cake for my uncle who does not like chocolate so I tried a frosting using jello and it came out horrible in my opinion.  The white cake also came out heavy so now I whip the egg whites separately before adding.  I used drop flowers out of royal icing that I made while practicing as well as a rose.  Wow am I learning a lot with each and every cake!

First Cakes - Cousin's Birthday Cake

This was a birthday cake for my father's cousin and at first attempt at making buttercream roses.  The chocolate frosting was too soft.  The purple roses were from my practicing with royal icing and the leaves were a first attempt.  The cake was too heavy, after this I always sift the flower and use cake flower at times.

First Cakes - Anniversary Fondant Cake

This was my first attempt at making and covering with fondant.  The design was created to cover the flaw's in the fondant.  It was an anniversary cake for my two sister's and their husbands.  The actual cake was also a first attempt at scratch cakes and it was a bit heavy.  I learned a lot from this attempt.
